Beginning sometime in 2025, Americans traveling to Europe’s Schengen Area must apply for authorization through the ETIAS for short stays. The ETIAS authorization is not a full visa but serves as a pre-screening process that helps ensure travelers pose no security risks. The authorization process will be completed online and is valid for three years, allowing for easy, multiple entries into the Schengen countries.

What is ETIAS and why is it being implemented?
The ETIAS is an electronic system established by the EU to better secure the borders of the Schengen Area and to streamline entry for visitors. ETIAS will ensure that visitors meet certain criteria before arriving to reduce delays and enhance security.
Who needs to apply?
All U.S. citizens planning to travel to the Schengen Area countries for short stays for tourism, business, or medical purposes must apply for ETIAS authorization. Long-term stays, such as study or work, may require a different visa type.
What is the application process?
The ETIAS application is a simple online process
- Access the official ETIAS application form online and provide personal details, travel information, passport details, and answer security questions. There is a nominal $8.00 application fee for adults (minors are free).
- Wait for approval. In most cases, approval is granted within minutes, though it may take up to 96 hours, so try to apply at least 72 hours before departure.
- Carry Proof. While the ETIAS authorization is electronically linked to your passport, you should also carry a printed copy.
What If my application is denied?
Though rare, denials can happen. The reason for denial will be communicated, and you’ll have the right to appeal or correct mistakes in your application.
Do I need to apply every time I travel to Europe?
The ETIAS authorization is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During its validity, you can enter the Schengen Area countries multiple times for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Your ETIAS information will be linked to your passport, so if you must replace your passport for any reason, you’ll also need a new ETIAS travel authorization.
What happens if I don’t apply and try to travel to Europe?
Without ETIAS approval linked to your passport, airport security (or cruise, bus, or train line staff) won’t let you board.
